Recognizing the Impact of Our Volunteers

Today, on International Volunteers Day, we take a moment to extend our appreciation for the monumental efforts of our dedicated volunteers. Their unwavering commitment and tireless contributions play a crucial role in making a positive impact on our community, and we are immensely grateful for their support.

At this year’s 10th annual Beer & Bites celebration, we witnessed an incredible turnout of support, with a record-breaking 125 volunteers from throughout the South Sound community. In the spirit of getting to know the incredible individuals who make a difference, we asked one remarkable volunteer to share a bit about himself and his volunteering journey.

Meet Tyler Sliva, a Senior Project Engineer with Rush Commercial, who has been volunteering at Beer & Bites since he joined The Rush Companies in 2015. Tyler's commitment to the event goes beyond just lending a helping hand—in addition to being one of the first to sign up to volunteer each year, he is ever willing to take on whatever role or task is most needed, from serving dinner and bussing tables to bartending and assisting with event setup and cleanup.Tyler’s passion for giving back and belief in the impact of CARE's initiatives are truly inspiring.

Tell us a little about you!

I’ve been working for Rush in the Commercial Construction Division since 2015. They hired me right out of college when I got my degree in Construction Management.

What inspired you to start volunteering with CARE?

I’ve always been willing to volunteer for events that the Rush Companies puts on. I know there is always a need for help, and especially because this one seemed pretty fun.

How long have you volunteered with CARE?

I’ve been able to volunteer at Beer and Bites for all but one of the years (not counting the COVID years where it wasn’t in person).

Can you share a memorable experience from your time volunteering with us?

As a bartender at the event, when it gets to the end of the night, shenanigans tend to happen. I’ll leave it at that.

How is CARE different from other organizations you support?

No other volunteer event I do requires me to serve beer, raises this much money, and feels like a real party. It really is a good time all around.

What motivates you to continue volunteering with us?

Seeing people I work with in the Commercial Division outside of the work environment having fun, listening to the progress Dr. Senecal is making on cancer treatment, and witnessing the money we raise is truly inspiring.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering at Beer & Bites for the first time?

It’s hectic, but it’s fun. It’s an event that is truly worth experiencing.

As we reflect on the success of Beer & Bites and the collective efforts of each and every volunteer, we want to express our gratitude to organizations like The Rush Companies and individuals like Tyler. Thank you for your remarkable generosity, heart, and commitment to shaping a better future.

Looking ahead to the new year, we encourage you to consider CARE as you explore ways to give back to your community. Each volunteered hour and individual who spreads awareness about our mission plays a pivotal role in expanding our ability to deliver life-saving, cutting-edge cancer clinical trials to patients in the South Sound. Together, we are restoring hope to those most in need of it.
